What You’ll Learn:
Foundations of Hat Making:
- Explore how straw and felt hats are made, from start to finish.
- Learn essential techniques for cleaning, blocking, and shaping hats that meet customer demands in any setting.
Basic Crown and Brim Shaping:
- Hands-on practice shaping crowns and brims for both straw and felt hats.
- Develop the skills to create unique, custom shapes that ensure the perfect fit and style for every client.
Tools and Equipment for a Hat Bar:
- Discover the essential tools and equipment needed to set up a hat bar for shaping and maintaining hats.
- Gain insight into maintaining a professional and efficient workspace for your store or personal use.
Customer-Focused Hat Fitting:
- Learn to measure and fit hats based on head size and shape.
- Understand how to identify different oval shapes and tailor hats to ensure a comfortable fit for each individual.
Certification and Confidence:

- Finish the course with a final test and receive a certificate, recognizing your proficiency in both straw and felt hat shaping.
Class Schedule:
- Friday, October 24: Learn the foundations of hat shaping, how hats are made and different types of materials. Begin shaping straw crowns and work on various crown styles in the afternoon.
- Saturday, October 25: Focus on brim shaping for straw hats. A field trip to a leading hat manufacturing facility, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the production processes and the chance to open accounts for premium materials. Followed by a visit to NRS. We close the day, relax and unwind with a fun complimentary group dinner in a local restaurant.
- Sunday, October 26: Dedicated to felt hat shaping, cleaning, brim cutting and remedial work, followed by a final test. Certificates will be awarded at 5 PM.
